Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Tyquan Lewis (6) drops to the ground after a tackle during the second half of an NCAA college football game against the Missouri Tigers, Saturday, Sept. 13, 2018, in Columbia, Mo.
Lewis played college football at Mississippi State.
The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 28-13.
The Georgia Bulldogs are recruiting the military in an effort to improve recruiting in the state.
“We need more athletes in the Georgia system,” Lewis said.
“They’ve never had a lot of military members in the school.
It’s kind of an eye-opener.”
Lewis played football at the University of Missouri and was an All-American and two-time SEC Freshman of the Year.
He said he plans to enroll early next year.
“I think I’m going to try and go to school early next semester so I can get a feel for it,” Lewis told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“My first year at Missouri I got to play in the SEC Championship Game.
I’ve played a lot in high school and college.
It is a great experience and I want to go to work.”
Lewis was drafted in the third round by the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Missouri in the 2013 NFL draft.
He spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers before being waived by the Falcons last offseason.
Lewis has three years remaining on his contract and will be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent when the 2018 NFL Draft is held on April 29.
He was a part of a Georgia defensive backfield that led the nation in sacks in 2018.
Lewis will be the fifth Georgia player to be recruited by the military since the military was legalized for recruiting in 2014.
The first recruits to join the military were former Georgia linebacker Terrance Davis, who was recruited by US Forces in the Philippines, and Army Specialist Andrew Rushing, who also went to the military and was drafted by the Washington Redskins.
In 2018, Georgia recruited seven players from the U.S. Military Academy who have signed contracts with other NFL teams.
The most recent recruits to sign with other teams are former Georgia wide receiver Johnthan Banks (with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and former Georgia cornerback K.J. Dillon (with Tampa Bay).
The Georgia Bulldogs have signed 11 players to contracts with NFL teams since 2014.
The Georgia Bulldogs are the No. 1 recruiting team in the country.
Georgia has a total of 7,622 recruiting visits with the military.
The program has recruited more than 1,100 players, according to the Georgia Military Recruitment Commission.
In 2018 the Bulldogs finished third in the Bulldogs Division I standings with a 9-4 record.
Georgia finished the season with a 12-1 record.
Georgia has the best recruiting rankings of any state with a 6-1 mark in 2018 and the No 1 recruiting class in the nation with a 247Sports Composite ranking of No. 7.
